It's clear that I won't see the new moon. And yet, God's will is far from being accomplished. Nevertheless, my life's journey will come to a swift end.
Being of sound mind, I want to write my will; indeed, it seems to me that I am not capable of expressing it in words. I have little time left and the last strength in my body will pay the last of my gifts to Seleucus and his descendants. Yesterday, in a dream, I again saw the city at its end. I thought that I would be received as a brother, but I greeted this thought with indifference. Everything was at once similar and different. This time too, the city was divided into three classes: that of the farmers, that of the guardians and that of the philosopher-kings. Then I got scared. Could the first dream be a vain lie, an empty fantasy? Looking more closely at this political order, I realised that the philosopher-kings, at least those who were aristocrats and priests, had set themselves apart from the other citizens. As the only ones educated in philosophy and the sacred mysteries, they forbade the other citizens to philosophise, in other words to meditate on the meaning of the sacred texts. And this is truly shameful; they appropriate for themselves the freedom to conduct the ceremonies necessary to welcome men in the face of God, and this freedom they grant themselves through worship, as if piety were not sufficient to consecrate a man to God. In this way, they become a caste very different from men, refusing even to beget descendants to whom they would transmit, by blood, the nature of their soul. "In this city there was no longer any unity, respect and love for others was destroyed as soon as equality before the law was destroyed... Real friendship was only permitted between those of the same caste. At the same time, since the nobles were the only ones to be taught philosophy and sacred matters through the study of the mysteries, they were not particularly distinguished by their education or their self-control, since they oppressed others. In reality, the philosopher-kings controlled and forbade, brandishing the distinctive signs of power, and did nothing other than act despotically by forbidding the majority of the faithful to attend worship services. It was necessary for the priests to use these numerous assemblies to encourage the people to examine divine things, what they teach us, discuss them and challenge them. And what's more, it was necessary for some of these priests to go out and bring the word of God to the faithful everywhere. What's more, I had the feeling that the philosopher-kings commanding the religious services were also worshipping Bacchus. Many of them were indeed drunk, and they made no attempt to dissuade the faithful from their debaucheries, many of which they indulged in under the influence of drunkenness. I wept silently, grief-stricken, and wet one side of my head. When I woke up, I thought about my descendants. Theophrastus will be enjoined to complete the construction of this city and see that it does not become corrupted. Let this last dream be an advice to them on how to behave. Let half the food collected and the bedding be distributed to all the city's beggars. That the wine stored in the city's cellars be given to my dearest granddaughter Poseidonia. That the oriental tablets be collected, stored and hidden in a safe place. They must never be discovered by those with malicious intentions. I hope that in times to come, it will be possible for the mysteries of these tablets to be revealed once again in the completed city. May the meal prepared in honour of my departure to God be plentiful, pleasant and not made of shellfish. I have always thought that they are disgusting and demonic. May my entire body be burned on a slow-burning pyre of wood... I've spent my whole life advising men not to ....
