Sponsorship is the option for a sponsor to invite a new player to play the game, the latter becomes sponsors' godson. It is possible to see your own or someone's else sponsor name from the profile page, accessible from the button just below the avatar picture.
Sponsorship allows the sponsor to earn gems if his godson buys any.
