An Episcopal Assembly is a meeting of all the bishops of a primacy. It is presided over by the Primate.

The Episcopal Assembly of France is known by the acronym AEF.

Here is an extract from the AEF's regulations.

General role

The Episcopal Assembly of France deals with all temporal affairs of the Kingdom of France, in consultation with other competent ecclesiastical authorities, in particular the Apostolic Nunciature.

The Episcopal Assembly of France chooses the broad guidelines for the Church in France in accordance with Dogma, Canon law and the decisions taken by the Curia.

Composition

The Episcopal Assembly of France is composed of ex officio members and co-opted members.

The ex officio members are:

  • the archbishops and bishops of France, i.e. those who have at least one parish under their authority that is part of the Kingdom of France
  • the In Partibus and emeritus bishops residing in the area under the authority of the French Episcopal Assembly
  • cardinals residing In Gratebus in France
  • Rectors of Roman Religious Orders residing In Gratebus in France
  • Grand Masters of Religious Military Orders residing In Gratebus in France
  • a representative of the Congregation for Secular Affairs
  • the knight-consul of the Holy Armies

Bishops and archbishops who have performed their duties correctly and regularly for more than three months remain emeritus members for two months after their resignation. A dismissal is not a resignation and does not entitle the person to emeritus status.

The Episcopal Assembly of France, as an apostolic institution bringing together all the bishops of France, and in order to ensure the coherence of the Roman Aristotelian Church, entrusts the metropolitan archbishops of the French primacy with the mission of associating and advising the suffragan bishops of their province. In accordance with the principle of episcopal autonomy, the archbishop has no direct authority over the suffragan dioceses except in the context of provisions relating to their vacancy.

Co-opted members are chosen by the Episcopal Assembly of France on the basis of their moral, intellectual and religious qualities.
